Hospitals. People go to the hospital all the time. Sick. Well. Dead. Born. You go to the hospital. At least you do in normal families. Mine is not a normal family. My dad... well one of them... was attacked and killed today. And where did we take him? To my Aunt Willow's house. Aunt Willow's the one beside me on the couch. Normally she's great, always talking and keeping everyone together. Like duct-tape, she's got a dark side, and a light side, and she's sticky when things fall apart. She's being so unusually quiet today because my dad and her are like brother and sister. For some reason, it's Aunt Tara that's talking today. She's holding my hand, stroking it and trying to convince me it's not my fault. It is, but I let her say it. It's nice to hear it, even if it's a lie. If I hadn't gotten distracted... but no, that's... I can't think about that right now. Y'know, it's almost like Aunt Tara and Aunt Willow changed personalities. Like they're different people. Will pops be different? Will he... no. Stop. Think about something else. In the corner. That's my Aunt Buffy and Uncle Angel. Actually Angel is sorta like my dad's step-grandfather, and Buffy is no real relation, but they're family. It takes real family to argue about who gets to be the one to kill you. That's what they're arguing about. Who should be the one to kill my pops. It was a silly little mission. A nest of fledgling vamps had been found in the old ruins. Pops and I stopped by to do a recon, see if we needed to call in for reinforcements. I was to wait outside with the bag... listen for a signal. Listen. That was all I had to do. Listen and wait... That kid in the chair? That's Lee. He's this guy I like from school. He has a band. Aunt Wills said I should be careful of boys with bands. She said they break more hearts than guitar strings.
He surprised me. I yelled. That was what clued them in. Pops had just made it to their hideout when they got him. I heard his scream a few seconds after mine. Lee ran into the ruined building, but I stood there a moment longer, the only thought running through my head was 'that wasn't the signal.' |
