The Mermaid

Part I
I met this mermaid a while back. No, she didn’t have fins or a tail or gills or anything. She didn’t wear seashells in her hair or seaweed or kelp or whatever. But she was a mermaid nonetheless. And when it rained she would watch, until nobody was looking, and she could slip outside and dance.

Part II
My cat keeps a careful eye on me.
I don’t think she knows I know.
And sometimes when I am really sad
I feel her paw on my hand or my knee.
She was only waiting for me to sit down
So she can reach.

Part III
When the mermaid met my cat, the moment was short. The cat stopped and stared, Why are you here? She then turned and ran from the room. The mermaid laughed and said that she had never seen water not be water before.

Part IV
I am sure, I told the mermaid finally, that you do not exist. You cannot. If I let you exist I will go mad. You must go.

My cat smiled. The mermaid sighed. And the rains swept it all away, leaving behind a cat and a mermaid.
